Leaving a gift in your will to The Rugby Portobello Trust looks after the community that matters to you. When we make our wills, we want to make sure our loved ones are cared for, but often we can also leave something special to the causes we support.

Leaving a gift in your will to The Rugby Portobello Trust will allow you to continue supporting our work, leaving a lasting legacy in your community. Every gift, no matter the size, will make a vital contribution to our important work with children, young people and families.

Everyday The Rugby Portobello Trust works with hundreds of children and young people in North Kensington and beyond. All of our services are free or heavily subsidised, and we are mostly funded by donations, so you know your gift will make a real difference to those who need it most.

How leaving a gift can decrease inheritance tax:

Leaving a gift in your will to The Rugby Portobello Trust can be highly tax efficient, reducing the inheritance tax your loved ones have to pay.

If you give at least 10% of your taxable estate to charity, the inheritance tax rate on the rest of your estate drops from 40% to 36%. If you already plan to give at least 4% of your estate to charity, increasing the gift to 10% means that both the charity and your taxable beneficiaries receive more.*

Your solicitor can advise further you on how leaving a gift can reduce inheritance tax.

There are three main types of gifts that you can make:

  • Residuary: a share or all of what's left of the value of your estate after your loved ones have been taken care of
  • Pecuniary: a specific sum of money
  • Specific: an item such as jewellery or art

The advantage of leaving a residuary gift is that it stays the same over time and you won't need to change your will to keep up with inflation or personal circumstances.

We encourage you to leave a gift without restrictions so we can use it as needed to best support the changing needs of local children, young people and families.

If you already have a will:

If you choose to include a gift to the RPT, there may not be a need to rewrite your current will. You can ask a qualified professional such as a solicitor to add an amendment, otherwise known as a 'codicil'. As a general rule, if the change is small or simple, you can use a codicil, and if the change is more significant or complex, they may suggest you make a new will.

For smaller donations or less complex wills, sometimes even a Letter of Wishes is enough to ensure that The Rugby Portobello Trust is supported well into the future.

Suggested wording for making your gift:

The suggested legal wording below will assist your solicitor in writing or amending your will to include your gift in support of our vital work.

Wording for a residuary gift:

'I give the residue of my estate to Rugby Portobello Trust, 221 Walmer Road, London, W11 4EY (Registered Charity Number 703163) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift.'

Wording for a gift of money or an item:

'I give the sum of £[insert amount] (or the item specified) to Rugby Portobello Trust, 221 Walmer Road, London, W11 4EY (Registered Charity Number 703163) for its general charitable purposes. I further direct that the receipt of the Chief Executive or other proper officer of the said charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said gift.'

Whilst we can't recommend a particular solicitor to make your will, we can suggest that you contact The Law Society, who can provide details of solicitors in your area, including those who specialise in wills. We always recommend that your will is drafted by a qualified professional such as a solicitor, as their businesses are regulated by law.

'Why I left a gift in my will to The Rugby Portobello Trust'

'I have always believed that if we invest time and care with young people, that it is the best investment for the future. I have been working with the RPT since the 80’s, and being involved with the Trust and seeing the impact of our work has been one of the greatest joys of my life. We have had wonderful support from the local community, both in funding us and being volunteers, and this support has been essential to the continuation of our programmes: we have survived because of your support. I love the idea that I can go on helping The RPT when I am no longer here.'
