Music Workshops With Amplify Studios and Finding Rhythms

This summer two groups of young people took part in music making workshops, as part of a collaboration between RPT’s Amplify Studios and Finding Rhythms.

Over a total of three weeks the young people wrote, sung, played, produced and recorded their own songs with help of the Finding Rhythms team. The project enabled young people to find their musical voice and learn about the ins-and-outs of music making, while encouraging them to collaborate as a team. Those who took part for a full session also earned a BTEC qualification. On the last day young people, friends and staff came together for a listening party to hear the songs they had created.

The final track list of 21 incredible songs showed the musical skills, raw talent and creative range of the young people who had all worked together to create the music. The songs range from rap to hip-hop to classic rock: each track brings together the abilities and creative visions of different young participants. Their work is now being turned into a professionally-produced album and will be released soon.

The workshops were a huge success with lots of positive feedback from everyone who took part. As a result Finding Rhythms will be returning to RPT in the October half-term to deliver a shorter one week workshop, so that more people can get to take part and others can further expand their skills.

These music workshops are part of a new, larger RPT project: Amplify Studios. Amplify Studios will be a creative hub for young people in West London, offering workshops, training and access to work experience in the creative industries. This term Amplify will, for the second year running, be holding a 10 week photography workshop with DAZED magazine and will be showcasing the work from an ongoing project with young people at RPT and the Mirador Collective. In addition, RPT and Amplify are renovating two new studio spaces at the Walmer Road centre, which will be opening in October 2019 with more, even bigger developments scheduled for 2020.
