 Colin Salmon's message

"Accept your part in the world and stand up, stop waiting for others to live your life for you.

Self destruction is the action of those afraid of their own power. Yes you are powerful, yes you are beautiful. You have kindness, justice, fearlessness in you, let them take flight and an ease will escort you through the challenges we all have to face.

Keep this in mind, but remain strong in yourself. Love those you choose yet remember to love yourself too. We stand alone together. Peace."

Heather Small’s message

“I agreed to give my support to the Rugby Portobello Trust because I believe very much in the work and commitment they are giving to a special group of people that I truly believe in - the young within our local community - a community that I grew up in.

I lived in North Kensington for my entire childhood and even used the facilities at the Rugby Club in my youth.

I understand that these are different times for our young people but I believe that the methods of survival and personal growth remain the same. I believe the potential for achievement is always possible and is based on the principals of hard work, determination, self-believe, the setting of goals and last but not least, love. These are essentially the keys.

I think that this is what the Rugby Portobello Trust tries to instil in all the young people they come in contact with. These are lessons for life that can never be learnt too soon and should always be remembered and implemented and this can always be done with love, not only for yourself but for others.”

Heather Small’s Short Biography

“I am fully aware of what it feels like to have teachers and others in authority look at you but not see you and never recognise your potential.

I wanted to sing from an early age but did not dare to speak my dreams and the one time I told a careers teacher, she all but laughed in my face.

Growing up in a council estate in North Kensington seemed to rule me out for most things in the eyes of a lot of people, but I had a very supportive mother who treated me with love and respect and made me believe that I was so bright and clever and hard working that I could achieve whatever my heart desired.

I joined my first band at eighteen at the one and only audition I ever went to.

We decided on the name Hot House and a few years later after two albums that no one bought I joined M People.

I was always shy and self-conscious but I loved to sing and was quietly ambitious. M People was a success, but we worked hard and wanted the same things – to enjoy what we were doing and make it the best we could make it.

The songs were a true reflection of how we felt and I continued this with my first solo album “Proud”.

I still believe in hard work and being self-motivated. I started to have vocal lessons early in my career, and I still have them, you can never know too much.

The best thing is, I still love to sing.
