Biographies
Gill FitzHugh MBE

Head of The Walmer Road School

"I have lived in North Kensington for over 30 years.
For the first 10 years I taught History at North Westminster Community School and was their Head of Community Development. I became involved in The Portobello Project at that time and became Chair of The Project.
The Project was an advice and information service for young people in North Kensington and around 400-500 visited us for help every week. It was through them that The Portobello Trust (1986) and Portobello Houseshare (1992) were set up. The Trust helped young unemployed people into work and Houseshare solved the problems of homeless young people in the area.
In 1992 I took on the job of Director of The Tabernacle and raised £4,600,000 for its development as a Community Arts Centre.
In 2000, I moved from being Chair of Trustees of The Trust and Houseshare, to being the CEO of both the organizations and planned the merger of the two charities with the Rugby Clubs in October 2003.
I am a widow with two children, a foster daughter and six grandchildren, and was awarded the MBE in 2001.

EVENTS COMMITTEE & VOLUNTEERS CO-ORDINATOR

"I have a longstanding involvement with work in the voluntary sector.

I joined The Rugby Portobello Trust in 1994 and have been co-ordinating volunteers, working with young people and assisting with staff development ever since.

My previous experience includes 15 years at Citibank where I held the position of Vice President, and I have worked in banking and human resources in New York, Hong Kong, London and Tokyo."

Through a wide range of activities and learning programmes, The Rugby Portobello Trust aims to develop the independence of young people in North Kensington for their benefit, and that of the entire community enabling them to achieve their personal best.
