The Rugby Portobello Trust supports young people in North Kensington, West London. Our aim is to help young people (between the ages of 8 and 25) to achieve their personal best, realise their dreams and to grow up to play a full part in their local community. Key to our work is to treat young people as individuals and our aim is to raise their self-esteem and develop their independence. We do this by providing a wide range of activities and learning programmes. These include life skills, such as how to find or train for a job; sex, drugs and pregnancy advice; sporting activities and outdoor pursuits. We run courses in such diverse subjects as computing, cookery and music production. We hold youth clubs at our Walmer Road centre, as well as activities in the community. Walmer Road School supports young people who are failing in mainstream education. Our young people gain qualifications, develop a sense of purpose and are reintegrated into education. We house 42 young people and provide support to a further 36 in their own accommodation. Many of them are leaving local authority care or are vulnerable and have experienced abuse or neglect. We help them to live independently and learn how to maintain their home in the long term.
